WATER SAFETY

Stay safe along the coast

Lee on the Solent NCI KAVS is part of the national water safety initiative, with the aim of reducing accidents and incidents around our coast and inland waters.  We seek to do this in a variety of ways:

  • providing relevant information about staying safe by the water,
  • undertaking beach patrols along the promenade near our station and
  • talking to the public about water safety as well as looking out for potential incidents and giving talks and presentations about water safety.

All our watchkeepers are water safety aware and many have been trained specifically about water safety. Additionally we promote the RNLI ‘Float to live’ campaign.

If you are going to the beach remember:

  • (where possible) Choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the flags.
  • Check weather, tides and be aware of rip currents.
  • Be visible – wear a tow float and a brightly coloured swim hat.
  • In difficulty – Remember ‘Float to live.’
  • Where there is no lifeguard, call 999 for the coastguard in an emergency

If you find yourself in trouble in the water:

  • Around half the people who die at the coast slip, trip or fall into the water. They never intended to get wet.
  • Take a minute:the initial shock of being in cold water can cause you to gasp and panic.Effects of Cold Water Shock pass in less than a minute so don’t try to swim straight away.
  • Relax and float:Float on your back while you catch your breath. Try to get hold of something that will help you float.
  • Keep calm:Once you're calm, call for help. Swim for safety if you are able.

Float to Live

  • Tilt your head back with ears submerged
  • Relax and try to breathe normally
  • Move your hands to help you stay afloat
  • It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently
  • Spread your arms and legs to improve stability

Water Safety Talks

Part of NCI’s role is to promote water safety and one of the ways we do this is by giving talks and presentations.   In 2024, our Water Safety Team gave 10 presentations to schools, a uniformed group and an activity club.   In total we spoke about water safety to approx. 1800 children and young people as well as their teachers and club leaders.  In 2025 we would welcome the opportunity to speak to more groups, so if you know of a school, club or group who would like a Water Safety Presentation, then please contact us via our watch station or by phoning 02392 556758 or emailing lee.on.the.solent@nci.org.uk
